Summary/Response Part I – Awakenings
The documentary provides insights into the events that took place during the civil rights
movements. The first part of the documentary is termed as the awakening which happened
between 1954 and 1956. The first part of the documentary involved the individual acts that
inspired the rise of civil rights movements. For instance, the killing of Emmett Till, a young
black boy from Chicago caused chaos and unrest as he was killed by two white men. Another
black woman is arrested because of refusing to give her bus seat to a white woman
(Discriminology, 2016). The incident led to the movements of boycotting city buses seeking the
court to rule out the segregation of the African Americans and the whites. The civil rights
movements continued until the court upheld the ruling indicating that the segregation was
unlawful. The abolition of the segregation saw the end of the bus boycotts.
Moreover, the Awakening provides a closer look at the challenges that faced the African
American communities in white supremacy societies. The blacks did not have basic human rights
