Organizing a curated group show is a complex process. Similar to a film director, a
curator needs to oversee every process and ensure that every detail of the event is captured
appropriately. As such, curators need to not only select the right artists, but they should also
select relevant works of art and the right venue, create an appropriate press release, allocate
the necessary budget, and design invitations. This assignment covers some of the most
important steps in organizing a hypothetical curated group event.
Selection of Artist
The upcoming hypothetical event will mainly exhibit Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat
was an American artist who lived between 1960 and 1988. While his artistic talents traversed
across music, drawing, and painting, he is most popularly known for his neo-expressionist
paintings. Unlike most artists, Basquiat had no formal artistic training. As explained by
Emmerling and Lehtpere (2015), Basquiat emerged as a little-known, untrained artist in the
1970s to one of the most sought after artists in the 1980s. Basquiat began by spraying graffiti
on walls in lower Manhattan before he got a job as a designer in a clothing shop. After a solo
painting career in the early 1980s, he soon captured the attention of many art dealers,
gallerists, and curators such as Annina Nosei, John Cheim, Diego Cortez, Jeffrey Deitch, and
Fred Hoffman, among others. However, Emmerling and Lehtpere (2015) explain that
Basquiat rose to fame after he was exposed to the global painting industry by Italian gallerists.
While his career was cut short by a drug overdose when he was just 27 years, he had become
one of the most popular artists of his time. In fact, his exhibitions in world solo shows,
appearing in television shows, and his documentation in books cemented his place as one of
