Chapter 11: Geography This week I want you to modify one of the activities from "Part II" of the mini-unit found on page 294-295 towards the end of this chapter.  Use a location you found after playing your 1 free round of geoguessr. How will you integrate geoguessr into your lesson? What will your objective be? How will you have students build knowledge towards that objective?  How will you know your students comprehend the information you are helping them learn?

Please place both responses (#1 and #2) in one post!!! 1. Summarize what you learned about concepts from Unit 2 Homework and how they could apply to your life in some way. For example, how could knowing the relative humidity be important? Keep in mind that driving in fog is dangerous, which is one way relative humidity is important to know. How can stability be an important concept, especially when it comes to rain and thunderstorms (which stability pattern can lead to thunderstorms and heavy rainfall)? Answer at least two of these questions and apply to your life in some way.  2. Dig Deeper (water vapor content vs. relative humidity): Explain (in your own words) why cold air with a relative humidity of 100% can actually be drier than hot air with a low relative humidity (say, 20%). Refer to Chapter 4 (especially Box 4.1 if you have the 12th, 13th, or 14th edition) and keep in mind that dry vs. moist air is directly related to water vapor content of air, whereas relative humidity is just the comparison of actual vapor content with the potential (or maximum) vapor content of air based on temperature.  3. This comment can include whether you agree or disagree with the post, a question about the comment, and/or additional thoughts that you want to add.  Peer One (Maya): Unit 2 Homework quiz furthered my understanding of relative humidity. Part I taught me that if the relative humidity is 100%, the dew point must be equal to the temperature. Part I also taught me that when calculating relative humidity, one must not calculate directly using the given temperature, dewpoint, or water vapor pressure, but instead use those pieces of information in reference to the chart to find the appropriate values to calculate the accurate relative humidity. Each temperature has a correlating water vapor pressure. Knowing the relative humidity is essential not only for driving, possibly in the fog but also for other tasks such as dressing appropriately to the daily weather (both temperature and what it will feel like) and how cloudy or possibly rainy it could be. Unit 2 Homework also helped me visualize different environmental lapse rates and determine their stability patterns. By plotting different environmental lapse rates, we were able to see how stable they were depending on whether they fell to the left of the wet adiabatic rate (unstable), to the right of the dry adiabatic rate (stable), or in between the wet and dry adiabatic rates (conditionally unstable). Furthermore, now that I knew how to determine the stability pattern, I could predict the type of clouds that would form in select conditions. Knowing how to determine and examine stability is an important concept when it comes to rain and thunderstorms because the atmospheric stability level indicates if the air is in the right conditions to produce different types of weather. Examples of this can be when air is stable and rising, thin clouds will form, with the possibility of light rainfall, and when unstable air parcels rise, tall clouds develop with the potential for heavy rain. Air with higher relative humidity does not always have a greater water-vapor content than air with lower relative humidity. If the temperature is quite cold and the relative humidity is 100%, the saturated air will have a numerically small saturation mixing ratio (for example, -40 degrees celsius has a 0.1 g/kg mixing ratio whereas 40 degrees celsius has a 47 g/kg mixing ratio). Such a small number plugged into the relative humidity formula will result in a relatively low number. Juxtaposing this would be an environment with hot air and lower relative humidity. The warmer air has a much higher saturation mixing ratio of grams per kilogram. Thus, with lower relative humidity, the water vapor content will likely be greater than that of the previous environment. The cold, wet air proves to be relatively less humid than that of the warm, less moist air, primarily due to their dramatically different mixing ratios weighing differently in the calculator to find relative humidity. Peer Two (Lucy): 1. Being able to know what the relative humidity is important for a number of reasons. One for example would be measuring and controlling the environment in a building. Commercial buildings that manufacture things such as chocolate and candy need to be aware of the humidity as it can affect the product. If there is too much humidity then it can start the effect called blooming where moisture forms on the surface of the candy and can dissolve the sugar. Humidity can also affect storage facilities that handle wood. The material can absorb the moisture and begin to mold. My dad works as a carpender and receiving molding wood would put a fairly large delay in the time plan for everyone involved on site. Stability in the atmosphere can have a fairly large impact on the outcome of a thunderstorm. For a thunderstorm to begin, it needs rapidly rising air which comes from unstable atmospheric conditions, moisture in the air, and lift. Heated air particles are shot upwards becoming cooler. This process is called condensation. Water molecules begin to bind together and form water droplets which make the clouds increasingly denser. Soon they are released in the form of small water droplets. Mixed with the high winds and high dense clouds, this creates a thunderstorm. 2. Why can cold air with a relative humidity of 100% can actually be drier than hot air with a low relative humidity (say, 20%)? Relative humidity is a measurement of how much water vapor is found in the air. This depends on the temperature as cold air can’t bind water together as well as warmer air. The relative humidity in return is higher the cooler it is. Simply put, cold air can hold more moisture than hot air but only when in the right conditions. Even though the air at 100% humidity is holding the max amount of water it can still feel dry.
