Sequencing with Flow Charts
2
Project managers extensively use flow charts to identify components of the task. Teams of quality management also use this chart for the simplification of the
work, i.e., elimination of wasted activities and steps. Besides simplification, the flow chart is a beneficial sequencing tool. One can define sequencing as the
arrangement of events in their desired or actual occurrence order. For instance, a reader must purchase a book before reading that book. Thus, the event of
purchasing that book would come before the second event, i.e., the event of reading the book in a flow chart. In the figure below, a sample flow chart is provided to
understand better how a simple flow chart works and who beneficial it is in arranging different events. It can be seen that the chart below comprises diamonds and
boxes, along with the stop and start ovals. Every box comprises a critical event, and each diamond contains a yes-or-no decision. At every specialized area and level,
the managers can properly sequence and identify any significant events. Flow charts assist the users in considering every relevant link in a specific attempt, along with
their appropriate sequence. It is a benefit of the flow chart as it assists in encouraging analytical thinking. However, there are some disadvantages too. Flow charts do
not specify the dimension of time—i.e., the time’s varying amounts necessary for completing every step, along with making every decision (Kinicki, Williams, 2016).
Scheduling with Gantt Charts For managers, another convenient tool for scheduling is Gantt charts.
3
It is a graphical technique for scheduling used historically in
operations of production. Over time, there has been changing in the applications of the Gantt chart. They are particularly beneficial for larger projects, for example,
the installation of a new network of computers or moving into a newer building. The figure below shows the way one can use a Gantt chart for more than merely
scheduling a job’s significant steps. Filling in the completed activities’ timeliness makes it likely to evaluate the actual progress. Gantt charts, similar to flow charts,
assist the managers in being analytical as they minimize tasks or jobs to separate steps. Moreover, Gantt charts are better than the flow charts as they allow the
planner to specify the time that must be spent on every activity (Kinicki, Williams, 2016).
