THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD’S IMPACT IN EGYPT

2

Introduction
Founded in 1928, the Muslim brotherhood has been a major player in the politics and
development of Egypt in the 20th and 21st century. Arguably one of the world’s most influential
Islamic movements, the brotherhood has drawn criticism from all fronts. Western media and
commentators have labelled the movement as “radical Islamists” while extremists such as Al
Qaeda have criticized the movement for failing to draw people into the lines of jihad (Leiken and
Brooke, 2007). The Muslim Brotherhood has its main base in Egypt where it is the largest and
the oldest Islamic organization in the country. The mission of the Brotherhood is to Islamize
society by promoting religious morals, values, and laws. The Islamic movement utilizes a
combination of political activism and preaching in a bid to effectively advance its mission.
Through the years, the group has gained prominence by providing the important social services
that the ruling government has failed to deliver to the people. Though it was outlawed for a vast
majority of the 1900s, the Islamic movement gained momentum in the early 2000s and was the
leading opposition party during the reign of Mubarak. The Islamic movement played a huge role
in the ouster of Mubarak in 2011 before it came to power through a majority win the elections
that followed. Though the influence of the Brotherhood Islamic movement has significantly
taken a hit after the ouster of embattled president, Mohamed Morsi, the movement remains to be
an important force in Egypt.
Through the history of Egypt, the Islamic movement has been involved in numerous
political shifts and changes. This raises the question about the impact that the Muslim
Brotherhood has had in shaping the current democratic and political landscape in Egypt. Did the
brotherhood derail progress and the process of democratization? What were the effects of the
Brotherhood’s rise to power? What is the movement’s standpoint on major issues such as gender

and democracy? It is without doubt that the history of Egypt cannot be fully understood without
an in depth analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood. This paper analyzes the impact of the uprising
orchestrated by the Brotherhood in Egypt.
