Problem 8
a) Calculated the success rates for each category of patients for both hospitals. Which hospital is better?
Hospital A
High Risk success rate:
Success rate=Nr of Success/Total Patients = 160/800=0.2
Low Risk success rate:
Success rate=Nr of Success/Total Patients = 400/500=0.8
Hospital B
High Risk success rate:
Success rate=Nr of Success/Total Patients = 20/200=0.1
Low Risk success rate:
Success rate=Nr of Success/Total Patients = 300/500=0.6
Hospital A is better than Hospital B because in both categories Hospital A success rate is higher than
Hospital B

b) Aggregate the data over the two categories of patients and calculate the overall success rates for
both hospitals. Now which hospital is better?
Hospital A
Hospital A Success Rate = Number of success/Total Patients= 560/1300
=0.4308
Hospital B
Hospital B Success Rate = Number of success/Total Patients= 320/700
=0.4571
In this case Hospital B is better because Success rate is higher than Hospital A
c) Explain the discrepancy between the results obtained in (a) and (b).
In first question Hospital A for both categories it was better than Hospital B.
In second question Hospital B was better after merging categories.
Discrepancy between the results in A and B is due to the following:
Even that number of patients in both Hospitals is the same for Low Risk ,in the High Risk the number of
patients in Hospital A is 800 which is Higher than patients in Hospital B (200 patients).Pooling of the
samples when there is a large difference in sample sizes will lead us to inconsistent results.
