Reform Movements. 2
Reform Movements
Reform Movements were very popular especially in the 19
th
century and they sort to
change social norms, do away with oppressions, increase the rights of minority etc. during this
time of the reform movement women were very active and took a prominent role in the
movements. This is because they had a lot of issues that they needed solved and they sought to
do so and fight for their rights through the movements.
In the 1800’s the role of women in the society was very restricted and they were not
considered in a lot of things. Their voice came second to that of men and a lot of the things that
men could participate in, they were not allowed. This was a big issue for them and as they
became more empowered academically, which was a struggle, they empowered and helped more
women and through this they became important figures in different fields that were previously
male dominated. They were now able to speak out and so they mobilized other women and spoke
against social problems/issues and fought for their rights.
This began the women rights movement and among the things that they fought against
was child labor, slavery, outlaw alcohol also known as the temperance movement etc. they
fought for their voice to be heard and for them to be given an equal opportunity as the men. They
wanted education for the women, the right to vote, the ability to speak freely at public gatherings
among other things that they fought dearly for. They no longer wanted to be behind the scenes
and this is why they took such a prominent role in the reform movement.
