In the article titled “Research Methods in Developmental Psychology” by
Angela Lukowski and Helen Milojevich, the issue of research in the area of infant and
child development is discussed. They explore the research methods and designs
typically used to study this topic by elaborating on the strengths, weaknesses, and
challenges associated with each. After reading this article, I found the method focusing
on involuntary or obligatory responses to be the most interesting and the most
important.
Babies can seem like huge mysteries considering their lack of worldly
understanding and verbal responses. According to Lukowski and Milojevich (2020), the
lack of motor skills in infants makes studying their behavior particular difficult. This is
why a method focusing on involuntary responses was created so infants can be studied
despite their limited sense of awareness of and engagement with their surroundings.
Involuntary or obligatory responses are those the people perform with little to no
thought. Infants enact such responses when they encounter some aspect of their
