“Project managers” sometimes carry a stigma with them. “What do they do?” people
may wonder, since it may seem, from the outside, that there really isn’t much going on, and that
the role is an easy one. The reality is anything but, and the stigma against project managers is
related to a lack of transparency about the role and the necessity of it in the workplace.
According to the Olivia Labarre, “project management involves the planning and
organizing of a company’s resources to move a specific task, event, or duty towards
completion.” This definition really helps us see the importance of the role; it highlights the
action that a project manager is ultimately responsible for: the completion of a project, which is
done through an iterative practice of research, planning, execution, monitoring and closing.
Research involves looking into the current business operations and finding places where
the process could be improve. Planning could involve testing some new ideas to see if a
proposed process would work better, understanding the benefits for the company and finding a
way to measure the difference. In the execution phase, the project manager is actively working
