Bhargava (2006) notes that globalization can be a double-edged sword offering a wealth of opportunities for collaboration with our fellow man, but with those opportunities comes inherent risk (p. 29, para. 1). Globalization impacts a person’s standard of living and their quality of life. In developing nations, globalization can have a beneficial affect by providing a better standard and quality of life for the population. Globalization allows for improvements in infrastructure, health-care, and education, which provide a better standard of living and quality of life. But there are detrimental effects associated with globalization as well. People in developed nations tend to benefit less from globalization as it moves jobs to less developed nations where the cost of manufacturing tends to be lower. By taking jobs away from people in developed nations and moving the jobs to under-developed or developing nations, globalization has a detrimental effect upon the standard of living and quality of life for people in developed nations. Globalization may also have deleterious effects on developing nations as larger international companies move into a region, smaller local companies can no longer compete and are forced to close. Identify at least two ethical issues that go along with the global societal topic you have chosen for your final essay. Explain how globalization contributes to or affects these ethical dilemmas.Cook County suburban municipalities compete with the City of Chicago for landing large corporations. One of the ethical issues that is encountered in large business deals are payoffs to city officials. The City of Chicago has the eighth largest economy in the world and is able to attract large business to the city based upon that ranking. The city of Chicago has a long- standing tradition called, “Aldermanic Privilege”. This unwritten policy has allowed city Alderman to make land-use decisions within their wards. Globalization and the need to attract foreign investment into the city has provided fuel to the fire of unethical practices by city Alderman. Political donations to Aldermanic elections by many of these corporations are not uncommon.Another ethical dilemma encountered in City of Chicago government that is affected by globalization is the city’s status as a “Sanctuary City”. Globalization has led to an increase of illegal immigration to the United States. According to Donato (2016), as large companies move to developing and under developed nations, they create a phenomenon called, raised bottom (para. 4). In this environment companies in competition with each other drive down wages and working conditions for their employees to attract international business. This has led to an increase in migration out of the affected companies and illegal immigration into the USA. Chicago has classified itself as a Sanctuary City and accepts illegal immigrants and protects them from deportation. This raises ethical concerns within Cook County because it violates federal law and places an additional financial burden on Cook County and the suburban municipalities.Propose solutions to these ethical dilemmas that are feasible financially, socially, and culturally.Concerning the ethical dilemma posed by “Aldermanic Privilege”, an ethical solution that should be considered is to restrict those elected officials from accepting political donations form corporations conducting business in their districts. Also, the mayor could prohibit the practice of Alderman controlling land-use decisions. The ethical dilemma posed by the Sanctuary City status, could be corrected by Cook County enacting a prohibition of municipalities from declaring Sanctuary City status.-Dusty MillerReferencesBhargava, V. The advent of the internet and social media delivers the ability to see and know what is happening just about anywhere in the world at any given moment. One in America could see what is happening in the streets of a country in South America in real time. The at the moment view leaves nowhere to hide if leaders of counties are operating unjustly against there people. Citizens in developed countries could demand those leaders do right by their people and improve living conditions. Conversely, companies in established nations are able to exploit poorer nations for financial gains. Borrowing from Arditi (2004); “For them, especially the red and black globaliphobes, the assault on sovereignty spearheaded by governments and multilateral agencies in the name of international trade strengthens the hand of the business and financial community, compromises the autonomy of domestic political decisions, and reinforces the submissive status of less developed countries to the dictates of the major industrial nations” (Arditi, 2004). This is the sad downside to globalization and all that drives it. The first topic that is mirrored in my topic is poverty. Not having enough money to afford clean water or basic sustenance to maintain life should be alarming to all developed nations. The amount of money one earns does not truly speak for the shortages in his or her life; the outlook for underdeveloped countries are horrible (Bhargava, 2006). The second topic is financial stability for struggling countries globally. The spreading of culture and enterprise around the globe is beneficial to producers of goods but often times, nations get taken advantage of because they lack economic power. To benefit from the wealth of successful countries, impoverished countries leaders sometime accept bribes (Bhargava, 2006). Globalization does both, it contributes to and affects poverty and financial stability in poor nations. Providing a market for resources from substandard countries encourages is a byproduct of globalization. Technology makes it easier to attain the resources from poor countries. Secondly, financial in a region that is already struggling only stifle the citizens further. When the economic system is compromise because it is being exploited by foreign nations, only scraps are left for the people (Bhargava, 2006). The solution for these issues would be for develop nations create laws within their boundaries to deal fairly with poor countries. When firms from established nations take advantage of sub-par nations, the fines should be significant from their own government. Socially, I believe the internet and public shaming is working to quell some of this behavior but I think more can be done. If all cultures are recognized and respected, it would lead to fair exchange between nations and place a large dent into poverty.ReferencesArditi, B. (2004). Student Reply 3: Meyanna AdamsEthics can be applied in all aspects of my personal, professional, and academic growth. Being ethical means upholding accepted standards as well as my own standards. Academically: I will use my own work. If I have to use someone else’s work, I will make sure it is properly cited. Professionally: I will make sure I do what I need to do to remain professional and conduct myself in a professional manner. Personally: I will uphold my own beliefs and not let anyone or anything sway me to do something I do not believe in.An ethical dilemma I recently encountered happened at work. I saw a parent and a teacher getting into a rather heated argument. The teacher said something that the parent did not like and the parent stormed off and the teacher followed. It is our job to made sure admin is notified when something like that happens. The teacher did not want admin notified, but I did what I knew was correct and notified them anyway. I know that it was proper protocol and it protects the teacher just in case more would have happened. My general education courses have helped influence my ethical behaviors both academically ad professionally. Researching topics for papers in those courses have helped me learn to cite the work of authors that I use in my research. As far as professionally, I have retained information for the things we learned in class. I had to take an ethics class and learn about different workplace scenarios. That helped me with situations that may arise while I am at work. Student Reply 4: Jennifer JoyceExplain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth.Gong and Zhang (2010), states “modern normative ethics, mainly, concerns acts, namely, what acts are good” (p. 257 para. 2). I agree with them. Being ethical is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered and describe how the issue was resolved. My daughter and I was in the store one day, she accidently stole one of those small surprise fingerlings (they fit on the end of your pencil). When we got into the car, she realized she still had it in her hand. I made this a learning experience for her, asked her what she should do. Do we just go home, take the toy back inside and return it, go back inside and pay for it? I left the decision up to her. She decided that we should go inside, and she paid for it. Gave the toy to her little sister. My daughter knows stealing is wrong, but sometimes accidents do happen but its how you react to the situation that says how much morals/ or how ethical you are.Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values. My general education classes have influenced my ethical values by making sure that I am not stealing others work when doing research, and that all the information that I turn in with my name on it is mine.GONG, Q., & ZHANG, L.
