Differences between Men and Women Leadership Styles
Leadership and power are both described as the capacity to influence and direct the
behavior of people. Leaders use power to galvanize and guide their subordinates. Traditional
leadership qualities such as competitive individuality, rigid structures, secrecy, and control have
been replaced by information sharing, flexibility, and teamwork in many organizations today
(Radu, Deaconu, and Frăsineanu, 2017). The best leaders of today offer support, motivate, and
listen to their subordinates. There are significant differences in the leadership styles employed by
both men and women.
The first difference between the two leaders is that while women are transformational,
male leaders are transactional. One feature of transformational leaders is that they put themselves
as role models by attracting the confidence and trust of their followers. Such leaders mentor,
empower and encourage their subordinates to reach their full potential and contribute more to
their organizations. Contrarily, transactional leaders hold that job performance is a result of a
series of transactions that should be disciplines or rewarded. Male leaders develop give-and-take
relationships, which satisfy the self-interests of subordinates in the workplace. Transactional
managers lead in a conventional way of stating the responsibilities of subordinates, rewarding
those who meet their objectives and, subsequently, correcting those who have failed to achieve
goals.
Another difference between male and female leaders is that female leaders love working
with flat organizational structures while male leaders work with hierarchical structures
(Merchant, 2012). Women prefer creating a collegial atmosphere with a flat organizational
structure at work. The method enhances the creation of new services or products that need

integration among employees. On the other hand, men prefer implementing a hierarchical
organizational structure that allows for easy delegation of authority and definition of roles.
Thirdly, female leaders use indirect communication at work while made leaders prefer
using direct contact. Female leaders indirectly express their expectation of a particular role to
give more ground in accomplishing an objective. The technique allows team members to use
