Part 1
Middle Eastern music presents complex structures in rhythm and tone and hence presents
alternatives to the common Western 12-tone system (equal temperament). It would be
unrealistic to make the 12-TET a universal absolute for tuning because this would rid Middle
Eastern music of its authenticity. One of the unique characteristics is the microtonality
whereby other systems such as the 24-TET are largely used in Middle Eastern music. This
produces a unique sound of the region’s music and is the basic identifier of this type of
music. Additionally, making the 12-TET a universal absolute would challenge the tradition of
improvisations in Middle Eastern music. Unmetered instrumental melodic improvisation
could be challenging with a 12-TET as compared to the 24-TET and hence using the former
as the universal absolute would interrupt the composition and performance of Middle Eastern
music. In general, while the 12-TET is common in Western music, it is not the basis for
Middle Eastern music and hence should not be made a universal absolute.

understanding of music by enabling me to realise the different tuning systems used around
