The cyclone which takes Dorothy to unknown land is a sign of irresistible pull towards unfamiliar issues. When the story starts, Dorothy doesn’t know3 any other place apart from her home Kansas. The cyclone sweeps her and Toto into a place she has never imagined. Dorothy does not fully accept and accept her new world as she is determined to go back to Kansas. The new place, however, makes her miss her home and realizes its value.

Citizens and animals in the Land of Oz were required to put on eyeglasses with green lenses for the surrounding to appear green. The city of emerald was not that green as the name puts implies. Some argue the green color might have been used to symbolize the American currency which is green. Baum might have also gone for the green color because Emerald is located between the Land of Winkies which is yellow and the Land of Munchkins which is blue. There is also a possibility the Baum chose the green color because he liked it. The point is the spectacles themselves were not important, but the green color of the spectacles was what was valuable. The guardian of the gate said to Dorothy, If she failed to put them on, “the brightness and the glory of Emerald City would blind you.” The color made Emerald city to look impressive and The Oz to appear powerful. The spectacles could only be removed when a visitor leaves Emerald. Although Oz was imposing imaginary landscape on the subjects, the story does not show anyone complaining about it.
