1. Ludwig van Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
The Ludwig van Beethoven 9
th
symphony, also known as the Choral, is a lovely, lively
exhortation to mankind, urging them to overcome the challenges that seem to divide them and
stand united as one. This symphony was Beethoven’s final complete symphony. It is considered
to be one of his greatest works. Throughout the entire concert, the symphony speaks of darkness
to light, alienation to love and unity, despair to salvation. The 2012 performance at the Royal
Albert Hall, during the British Broadcasting corporation's (BBC) Prom music festival in Britain,
was conducted by artistic Daniel Barenboim and performed by the West-Eastern Devan
Orchestra. This orchestra was founded to provide a platform to study, play and promote music
that enhances understanding between conflicting Israel and Arab nations. Every summer, young
Arab, Israel and European nationals sign up. The orchestra is based in Seville, Spain. Its mission
is to promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence between conflicting nations
through music ( Vulliamy, 2008).
Having used his musical influence for humanitarianism, Daniel Barenboim' is considered
to be “bring harmony where there is discord.” He also happens to be the first conductor to
conduct a complete Beethoven symphony cycle since 1942. He is the star of this performance.
Beginning from the orchestra that performs and the history behind it to the diversity of the
individual artists and their reasons for being together in that moment, it was all noble and
inspiring. The orchestra was a strong show of a united front, in alignment with the message
delivered by the Choral: hope, triumph and reconciliation. The symphony is after all, a hymn to
universal brotherhood. The efforts of this orchestra, and more so the work put into it by
Barenboim, is a lesson to us all. We can spread peace and show solidarity through the simplest of
