Comparison of English Colonies
While British settlers in America shared a common origin, the societies in English
Colonies in the South and the New England Colonies in the North differed due to varying
environments and reasons for settlement. Englishmen flocked America because the colonies
offered them an opportunity to enjoy their religious freedom and explore their economic desires.
When they arrived in America, they found large pieces of land that they could exploit and native
populations with whom they could share their values. However, the colonies had different
environments that influenced the activities of the Englishmen. Settlers in the south found an
excellent climate and fertile soils for agriculture, an activity that became their primary source of
revenue. Conversely, the weather in the north was less favorable, forcing settlers to generate
revenue through alternative means. Notably, while southern and northern colonies propagated
slavery and elevated the status of women, they had different trade systems, they treated slaves
differently and developed dissimilar political structures.
Similarities
A key similarity between the colonies in the north and south was slavery. During the
establishment of the colonies, settlers needed slaves to work in their homes and farms.
Southerners needed slaves to work as laborers in their labor-intensive tobacco plantations....
