Clinical diagnosis is the estimated identification of an infection or disease based on a
patient's complaints. Complaints from a patient are based on signs, symptoms, or medical
history. One of the primary devices that can get used for clinical diagnosis is the Lab-on-a-chip
(LOC) device. A lab-on-the-chip method is an automated system (laboratory system) used for
various clinical applications both within and outside the hospital. (Figeys & Pinto, 2000) Many
laboratory functions get integrated into a single integrated system commonly known as a "chip."
The chip is usually a few millimeters to centimeters. Some of the clinical applications that can
get done on the lab-on-the chip device include:
✓ Measurement of blood gases
✓ Measurement of blood glucose
✓ Measurement of cholesterol levels
✓ Counting of the amount or number of HIV cells in the body
Based on the current state, as described by the National Institute for Health and Environment,
Lab-on-the-chip devices are developing rapidly and taking the clinical diagnosis sector by storm.
(Daw & Finkelstein, 2006) It is expected that the number of Lab-on-the-chip devices will
increase soon. Such an increase will be a result of the adoption of the lab-on-the-chip method as
a vital part of clinical diagnosis. The Lab-on-the-chip process has various advantages over the
other type of clinical diagnosis. These advantages include:
➢ Lab-on-the-chip promotes fast diagnosis at the point of care (the area where a diagnosis is
required). Due to the quick diagnosis, the lab-on-the-chip clinical diagnosis is getting
adopted faster by various clinics as well as nations. (Mark et al., 2010) In the past, it was
challenging to carry all required tests at a point of care. This was due to the lack of the
required devices everywhere.
