Chapter 20
Summary

Chapter 20 deals with the head of the FBI James Comey, a man whom Trump wants to remove from authority, despite counterarguments presented by Bannon that the FBI is a permanent institution that may find a way of retaliating against the President (Woodward 143). Nonetheless, Trump is determined to of terminate Comey’s position although McGahn finds a possibility of stalling the process. The Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein wants to come in and see the President to discuss the Comey situation Comey. Therefore, McGahn asks the president to listen to Rosenstein first before making his decision (Woodward 143). Unfortunately, Rosenstein wants Trump to fire Comey, having several reasons. Therefore, Trump takes the step and fires him from office, effective immediately. Bannon is sure that Ivanka is behind the issue since she complained to Trump about the FBI (Woodward 144).

Rosenstein launches an investigation on Trump. This infuriates the president since it seems like he has a bone to pick with the head of the investigation, Robert Mueller (Woodward 145). David Gergen says on TV that the investigation may be the starting point of an impeachment of the President. Trump is angry, and the day's schedule does not happen. He thinks that the fight is unfair and claims that he needs to fight back (Woodward 146).

Analysis

As the author puts it, Trump wants to fire Comey due to some personal issues. The only reason he gives is that people hate Comey but that does not justify the act. Bannon understands this and that is why he tries to object to the President’s decision. However, Rosenstein’s influence leaves Bannon helpless and he cannot convince Trump to change his mind. Nevertheless, the fact that Rosenstein brings his grievances indicates that Comey may have issues and possibly deserves to be fired. However, opening an investigation after Comey leaves shows that the FBI has something on Trump, and it needed a trigger point before beginning the investigation. Trump’s reaction also shows that he is afraid for he might have something that may jeopardize his job as president. He also believes in fighting a fair fight, or one that he has the upper hand in, considering that he feels humiliated by the FBI and he keeps on saying that it is unfair.
