Chapter 2
Summary

This chapter begins with the narrator’s reflections on his relationship between him and his two parents. While Theo was very close to his mother, he saw his dad as unreliable. After the incident at the museum, Theo remains in their apartment awaiting his mother to return. All through, Theo is worried that his mother believes he has died. Since elementary school, Theo had sealed a deal with his mother that, in case of an emergency, they would meet at the apartment. This deal made Theo remain in their apartment despite his temptations to go out and search for her. The hope of his mother coming home ends when two individuals the narrator had not seen before visits him at the apartment. They were social workers who came to break the sad news to Theo, and to seek an alternate residence for him. This is a very devastating moment in Theo’s life because the worst thing that he has ever thought of is his mother not returning home after work, let alone death.

Analysis

This chapter reveals mysteries surrounding the disaster at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. First, Theo was still hoping that his mother would return home. At the same time, Theo is sure that his mother believes he had died. After calling various emergency numbers and following the news in vain, he remains in the apartment believing that his mother would honor the deal they had previously sealed. The fact that Theo is never to see his mother the same way he had seen her when he had left to view The Anatomy Lesson symbolizes a relationship between the events at the museum and what Theo is going to learn over time. The Anatomy Lesson is a much-feared painting because it features grotesque imagery of doctors handling the content of a naked, open corpse. The author uses this relationship to suggest that, from that moment onwards, Theo would face the world’s naked and horrific details. His failure to accompany his mother when she went to view The Anatomy Lesson painting saved his life, yet his life would certainly become difficult in his mother’s absence. The worst thing Theo had expected is failing to see his mother return home.
