Becoming
Michelle Obama

Chapter 18
Summary

The author sums up the second part of this book chronicling Election Day and their anxiety. Obama writes that after nearly twenty-one months campaigning, the big day had finally arrived. During the election, Michelle hesitated only to see Barack glancing her way and laughing “You still trying to make up your mind” (Obama 241). That night both Barack and Michelle were ready, waiting for the outcome. They both knew that no matter the election result, they had done well. At exactly ten o’clock, Barack was declared the 44th President of the United States of America (Obama 244). Michelle felt as if she had “been lifted out of her own body” (Obama 244).

Analysis

In this chapter, Michelle seems to pour out her anxiety after casting her vote. The day they had both waited a long, long time for had arrived. This was the day when Americans would choose their 44th President. The author candidly describes her reaction after Barack was elected as the 44th president. The many months and trying hours she had spent on the campaign trail were finally marked with unusual calmness.
