Definition
In business, operations management is a function that helps in the management of the creation
process of goods and services. Its significant elements consist of planning, directing, organizing,
and controlling of all the possible resources needed in the production of an organization's goods
and services. This business function manages an organization's production system by ensuring that
the converted minimal inputs result in optimal outputs. It also ensures minimal cost during the
production process: It is the supervision of business practices to maintain the desired degree of
effectiveness and efficiency in business operations. It manages the conversion of materials and
labor into quality finished products that optimizes the organization's overall returns
(Stevenson.et.al, 2007).
Operations management is responsible for the designing and controlling role of an organization's
production process. It also maintains quality and high performance in an organization through
redesigning business operations in the production processes. Along with finance, marketing,
supply chain, and human resources, operations are also among the top functions in an organization.
In order to carry out the operations functions, one requires to manage and control the daily
manufacture of goods and services towards the achievement of long-term organizational goals and
objectives. It, therefore, means that operational functions should be aligned with the organizational
strategy to ensure the success of a business.
