Rudolph Nureyev was born on 17th March 1938 in east-central Russia, a place called
Irkutsk. This was a period marked with political turmoil in Russia. This period of the great
purge, as it is commonly referred to, marked an era of political campaigns against members of
the communist party and all perceived threat. Nureyev was born in a period, arguably, one of
Russia’s darkest moments. Nureyev was born to Hamet and Farida Nureyev as their only son in a
family that had three other daughters. Though his father, who was a military man, wanted
Nureyev to become a soldier, Nureyev took a different path and he was involved to the
Leningrad Choreography school due to his dancing talent. Nureyev started dancing with folk
groups in his home town and was later signed by Kirov to take up the role of a soloist in 1958.
Nureyev got this role because of his exemplary performance in a dancing competition.
