According to (Juhnke, 2009) it involves an intensive evaluation by clinicians,
counselors or family physicians to establish whether or not there is diagnosable substance abuse
problem. The main intention for screening and assessment is to identify drug abusers as early as
possible so that appropriate intervention is granted. It is barely impossible to recognize persons
with substance abuse problem by mere observation especially for beginners. Moreover, someone
cannot be termed a drug addict because he has had too much to drink or has consumed
intoxicated drugs. It is for this reason that there is a standardized procedure and tools to analyze
drug abuse and addictive disorders.
The process of identifying whether or not one has a drug problem begins with
screening. Screening is the primary evaluation to establish whether key elements of substance
abuse exist in an individual. Once the client is screened he is assessed for thorough clarification
of drug problem existence. (Arthur e. Jongsma Jr., 2012) Explains that assessment report are
comprehensive in such a way it suggests the most appropriate type of treatment if the client is
diagnosed positive. Moreover, the assessment process should determine the severity of the
situation and Re-occurring conditions.
There are a variety of tools used during the assessment process. The most widely
used tool to identify how severe the problem is, is the Addiction Severity Index (ASI).This tool
is in form of an interview which purposes to gather information about the client. The interviewer
draws his ratings on the severity of the condition. In addition, the ASI inquiries are in such away
