Best practices in Project Management Best practices in project management Best practices refer to the technique, method or process that is believed to be more efficient in achieving goals when applied to any circumstances. They are based on experiences and are used to describe the process of following standard ways of doing things. In project management, best practice basically includes these two factors: • Strategic Guidelines • International standards *(Liviu. I, Crisan. E, Muresan. I, 2010). Best practices in project management: • Defined Life Cycle and Milestones • Stable Requirements and Scope • Defined Organization, Systems, and Roles • Quality Assurance • Planned Commitments • Tracking and Variance Analysis: • Corrective Action Decisions: • Escalation and Issue Management • Work Authorization and Change Control *(Salapatas, J. N. (2000) Some of the benefits of best practices in PM are: • • • • • • • • • *(Liviu. I, Crisan. E, Muresan. I, 2010). Transfer of knowledge Better communication Time and cost savings Better process quality Better team work Better position on the market An international approach of labor Better monitoring and controlling of projects A more efficient and objective audit Project Management International Standards and Guidelines • ICB : International Competence Baseline issued by the International Project Management Association (IPMA) • ISO 10006 : Standard for quality management in project management issued by the International Standards Organization (ISO) • PMBOK : Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI) • PRINCE: Project management standard developed and issued by the British Office of Government Commerce (GOC) • PCM: Project Cycle Management Guidelines issued by the European Commission *(Salapatas, J. What is Project Planning? What is Project Planning? • The main aspects of project planning could defer based on the type of project. • The objectives are different for each project and hence it becomes necessary that we are listing the necessary requirements for a project before executing the process. • Project Planning would also mean that the resources that have been allocated have to be checked upon and used in the right manner so that the execution process does not stall. • As mentioned in the fig, project planning has to be prioritized so that we are in a position to complete all the steps in a project beginning from the coding to the execution. • All of the parameters mentioned in the fig would have to be considered when we are planning the execution of a project. Importance of Project Planning Basic Principles of Project Planning • Determining how to plan • Developing the scope statement • Selecting the planning team • Developing the schedule • Developing the Budget • Risk Planning • Gaining formal approval to begin work References • Ika, Lavagnon. Introduction

Project Management involves the various ways which a person uses to
organize or manage resources which are essential or necessary in completing
certain project.
Therefore project management involves the application of the skills, tools and
other techniques to the various project activities purposely to meet project
requirements.
Project management plays a vital role within an organization since it aids in
improving the chances of achieving or acquiring desirable or favorable results
on your project (Meredith et al, 2017).The phases of project management
include; initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and project

Project Initiation

Initiation is the first phase of the project management lifecycle.

This phase includes or involves the measurements of project values and feasibility.

Project managers usually use various evaluation tools and techniques in determining whether to pursue the project or not (Kerzner, 2017).

Evaluation tools which are used in determining whether enacting certain project will be worthwhile include;

(i)Business Case document

This document aids in justifying or clarifying the need for the project.

In addition this document includes or highlights the estimate or approximate of the potential financial benefits which may result from the enactment
of the project (Harrison & Lock, 2017).

(ii)Feasibility Study

This study

Also

involves an evaluation carried out purposely to determine the various goals or aims of the project.

this study enables

project managers to determine the cost which may be incurred in the enactment or implementation of the project to

determine whether the project should be executed or not.

In addition

feasibility study

aids or assists in balancing the requirements of the project

Project Planning

Project planning involves all the activities which are carried out

Also planning involves the act of using the various resources which have been allocated wisely or in the right manner so as

purposely to aid in making the project successful.

to ensure that the execution process does not stall (Ika, 2009).

Project plan which is well written aids in offering guidance for obtaining resources as well as getting financing.

Planning gives the team direction in producing

quality

outputs as well as handling various kinds of risks which may

befall the organization purposely to minimize the damage which they may cause once they befall an organization.

Lastly project planning

equips the team or individuals of the project with knowledge on how to handle

they might encounter throughout the course of the project (Munns, 1996).

obstacles which

Project Execution

This phase is
mostly associated
with the project
management.

Execution involves
the act of
establishing or
creating
deliverables that
satisfies the
customer or
consumers.

This phase relies
heavily on the
planning phase of
the project
management (The
Value of Project
Management.
(2010).

This is simply
because the various
tasks of team or
members of the
project are
derived from the
project plan.

Project Monitoring and Control

This phase of project management helps in providing an understanding of the progress of project work to ensure that correction

measures can be taken earlier in case the project performance does not comply with the project plan.

This stage also helps in meeting the desired quality levels of the project since time and cost are preserved thus ensuring good
project scope (Salapatas, 2000).

Again, the project managers may use existing organizational performance to measure project performance at different intervals
