Description

Requirements:

Dueling opinion editorials (1-2 pages) :

Read the two New York Times’ opinion editorials (OpEds) about impeachment. Consider each in terms of its opinions (if it’s an OpEd, it’s got some), its assumptions, and its facts. For each OpEd select two of the opinions that the author asserts. Are those opinions supported in the essay? If they are supported, what type of support does the author provide: assumptions? facts? both? If an opinion is not supported, what type of support should the author provide? What is the author’s purpose, and what information from the article indicates that? Does the author achieve his purpose? (Note that achieving his purpose may be independent of whether you agree with the author’s point of view.) What do you feel is the purpose of the Times Editorial Board in publishing both articles? Your objective is not to try the impeachment case.

“Why I'm Voting to Acquit President Trump” & "In Private, Republicans Admit They Acquitted Trump Out of Fear" In the article "Why I'm Voting to Acquit President Trump", the opinions have both; assumptions and facts. For the first example, it is an assumption, he writes "However, I do not believe these actions rise to the level where it would be necessary to remove a president from office." A LOT of people would disagree with that, and the facts or support after that statement is also opinionated, yet there is a little bit of facts. The second opinion in this article is "I believe it is possible for both parties to come together for consensus solutions on these three issues:". With this opinion, there is assumptions and facts, and the fact that statistics could prove his argument; it shows support, but I was wondering what these had to do with the impeachment. To me, he went off topic. First comment: In the article "In Private, Republicans Admit They Acquitted Trump Out of Fear", the first opinion states "They stop short of explicitly saying they are afraid". I believe that is an opinion because there really is no support or evidence on anyone saying that they were scared at that moment. The second opinion is " So that's not really the reason for their united chorus of "not guilty"." This opinion just seems like perspective; what he/she saw. Although they had a lot of quotes and name-dropped some people, that could be the support, but it seems like this whole article is a entire opinionated review on their feeling of Trump not being guilty. In Private, Republicans Admit They Acquitted Trump Out of Fear
The first opinion is that, with fear we are vulnerable and easily bought. Despite the
Republicans awareness of the president’s wrong deeds, they went ahead to acquit him.
According to Sherrod, their attachment to power made them victims of fear. They were afraid to
